Termopotencia

La termopotencia, o potencia termoeléctrica (también llamada el coeficiente Seebeck) de un material es una medida de la magnitud de un voltaje termoeléctrico inducido en respuesta a una diferencia de temperatura a través de ese material. La termopotencia tiene unidades de voltios por kelvin (V/K), aunque se da más a menudo en microvoltios por kelvin (\muV/K).
El término termopotencia es un nombre errado ya que mide el voltaje o campo eléctrico (no la potencia eléctrica) inducido a una diferencia de temperatura. Note que la unidad de termopotencia (V/K) es diferente de la unidad de potencia (vatios).

Colossal Seebeck coefficient in strongly correlated semiconductor FeSb2 - Abstract - EPL (Europhysics Letters) - IOPscience
For more than a decade strongly correlated semiconductors and Kondo insulators have been considered as potential thermoelectric materials. Such materials have large d- or f-character of the electronic band structure close to the Fermi level that theoretically leads to Seebeck coefficients (S) with large magnitudes. In this work it is shown for the first time that the strongly correlated semiconductor FeSb2 exhibits a colossal Seebeck coefficient of ~−45000 μVK−1 at 10 K. The thermoelectric power factor PF=S2·ρ−1, where ρ is the electrical resistivity, reaches a record high value of ~2300 μWK−2 cm−1 at 12 K and is 65 times larger than that of the state-of-the-art Bi2Te3-based thermoelectric materials. However, due to a large lattice thermal conductivity the dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit is only 0.005 at 12 K. Nonetheless, the potential of FeSb2 as a future solid-state thermoelectric cooling device at cryogenic temperatures is underlined.

Nanoscale Research Letters | Full text | Tailoring of Seebeck coefficient with surface roughness effects in silicon sub-50 nm films
The effect of surface roughness on the Seebeck coefficient in the sub-50-nm scale silicon ultra thin films is investigated theoretically using nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. For systematic studies, the surface roughness is modelled by varying thickness periodically with square wave profile characterized by two parameters: amplitude (A 0) and wavelength (λ). Since high Seebeck coefficient is obtained if the temperature difference between the ends of device produces higher currents and higher induced voltages, we investigate how the generated current and induced voltage is affected with increasing A 0 and λ. The theoretical investigations show that pseudoperiodicity of the device structure gives rise to two effects: firstly the threshold energy at which the transmission of current starts is shifted towards higher energy sides and secondly transmission spectra of current possess pseudobands and pseudogaps. The width of the pseudobands and their occupancies determine the total generated current. It is found that current decreases with increasing A 0 but shows a complicated trend with λ. The trends of threshold energy determine the trends of Seebeck voltage with roughness parameters. The increase in threshold energy makes the current flow in higher energy levels. Thus, the Seebeck voltage, i.e. voltage required to nullify this current, increases. Increase in Seebeck voltage results in increase in Seebeck coefficient. We find that threshold energy increases with increasing A 0 and frequency (1/λ). Hence, Seebeck voltage and Seebeck coefficient increase vice versa. It is observed that Seebeck coefficient is tuneable with surface roughness parameters.

Theory of Seebeck Coefficient in Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
Based on the idea that different temperatures generate different conduction electron densities and the resulting carrier diffusion generates the thermal electromotive force (emf), a new formula for the Seebeck coefficient (thermopower) S is obtained: S=(2/3)ln2(qn)-1εFkBD0, where kB is the Boltzmann constant, and q, n, εF, D0 are charge, carrier density, Fermi energy, density of states at εF, respectively. Ohmic and Seebeck currents are fundamentally different in nature, and hence, cause significantly different behaviors. For example, the Seebeck coefficient S in copper (Cu) is positive, while the Hall coefficient is negative. In general, the Einstein relation between the conductivity and the diffusion coefficient does not hold for a multicarrier metal. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes are superconductors. The Seebeck coefficient S is shown to be proportional to the temperature T above the superconducting temperature Tc based on the model of Cooper pairs as carriers. The S follows a temperature behavior, , where Tg ’= constant, at the lowest temperatures.
